Examination versus Judgment

My task this year is to learn how to walk unashamed. Another element of the lesson is to discern the difference between examination and judgment. In the last two months, I have been remembering times when I failed. I realize that I have judged myself guilty of any errors or hurt I caused others, including before I was born again. Being a strict taskmaster over myself usurps God’s authority. Paul instructs us to test ourselves regarding faith.

2 Corinthians 13:5 Examine yourselves to see whether you are in the faith; test yourselves. Do you not realize that Christ Jesus is in you—unless, of course, you fail the test? NIV

However, Paul makes it clear that judgment is not for us to practice, either of others or ourselves.

1 Corinthians 4:3-4 I care very little if I am judged by you or by any human court; indeed, I do not even judge myself. My conscience is clear, but that does not make me innocent. It is the Lord who judges me. NIV

One dictionary definition of judge is to determine or pronounce after inquiry and deliberation. Paul explains that judgment of the believer belongs in the hands of the holy and righteous Judge, not in human hands. In addition, the word examine is defined in part as “to test the condition of.” So, we look to the state of our hearts and minds to confirm that we are believers. As believers, we have the imparted righteousness of Jesus Christ.

I have been missing a critical step in the process. I need to submit what I find in myself and my life to the Holy Spirit. Only God can judge what I find, and Jesus sent the Holy Spirit to live within each believer to teach us and show us the truth. Instead, I’ve been convicting myself as guilty instead of asking God what the truth is about myself and my behavior.

I choose today and for the future to submit ALL portions of my life to the direction and judgment of the Holy Spirit. My perfectionism dies and I walk in freedom. Do you need to let judgment of self die too?
