Bringing Order to My Home

Moving and unpacking has forced me to work to bring order in my new home. In making progress, I realize that establishing order in my life is paramount to my peace.

Order is defined in one dictionary entry as “a state in which everything is in its correct or appropriate place.” I normally think of possessions when I think of order but bringing an order to the tasks I need to do is also important for me. That’s why the lists I’ve written about before are key to the organization of my life.

My list does not rule my life, however. Being led by the Holy Spirit daily moves me forward in the right direction. My move is an example; when I contacted my friend about selling my home, I thought I’d stay somewhere in Texas. The state was my adopted home for nearly 25 years. Indeed, I lived in my house there for longer than anyplace since before I was married. But when I spent a long weekend in Tennessee visiting family, I realized how much I missed the terrain of the Appalachian Mountains; I had lived in or near the foothills in Ohio for most of my life before Texas. Flat is wonderful to see weather coming but the rugged hills and valleys, streams and rivers are what I find most homelike. So, after God’s assurance that I was leaving Texas because it was His idea, I find myself so at peace here and the certainty of His leading makes for contentment.

This week has been very fulfilling. I have rearranged furniture, emptied boxes, and really settled in my mind what my new home is to look like. There is more to do, but completing some tasks encourages me to keep going. The light at the end of the tunnel grows closer and brighter. Next up is settling on churches to visit. Online experiences give me a glimpse of what communities are like, but in-person attendance is mandatory to really connect for me. I look forward to the leading and order God brings to my life as this journey continues. Paul encouraged the Corinthians:
