Faith Over Fear

The viral illness that hit me three weeks ago is gone. I hadn’t had a serious one in three years. It may or may not have been COVID-19; testing was done late enough after onset to yield a false negative, according to my doctor. What astounds me is the peace I had throughout the duration of symptoms.

My perspective highlights the change in my understanding of the nature of reality. It began many years ago. I realize that this physical life is tenuous and short in comparison to eternal spiritual life. Psalm 39:5 speaks of the life of a human being like a vapor that vanishes. Each time I mourn not seeing family or friends, especially with the current travel issues, God reminds me that I have all eternity to worship Him with those who also love Him. The certainty of everlasting life makes any threats to health seem irrelevant; knowing what happens after this body fails comforts and sustains me.

In retrospect, my symptoms were significant. Wisdom from God allowed me to blunt the problems of head and chest congestion before they blossomed. I take current reports of medical complications seriously. Preventative treatment seems to be making a difference for many patients. I paid close attention to my breathing and dealt with any hint of wheezing. My physician said I was doing everything I could to minimize secondary problems.

I believe my attitude was instrumental in keeping me cognizant of potential problems. I believe that I have work to do for the advancement of the Kingdom of God. I encourage others and myself to just choose faith over fear in everyday life. Paul encouraged the Philippians to always remember that they are first citizens of heaven and to make choices as such, with the result:

Philippians 1:28 And then you will never be shaken or intimidated by the opposition that rises up against us, for your courage will only prove as a sure sign from God of their coming destruction and that you have found a new life.
