Remembering My First Love

This season of quarantine has found me remembering part of my first love. Being born again in a Spirit-filled Methodist church in the 1970s meant singing the scriptures. The Jesus movement took many forms, including singing from the Book of Psalms. As Kent Henry says, we didn’t know any better than to sing His word. I fell in love with God during that sweet season of my life. Knowing Jesus as my friend creates a quality of new life that overwhelms the soul to this day.

Rediscovering Kent’s ministry during quarantine is one of its greatest blessings to me. Kent, his wife Carla, and their son and IT wizard Matt are facilitating a group of online, worldwide prophetic worshiping intercessors. We gather every day to worship, sing from the Psalms, and pray for ourselves, one another, our countries, and the world. I say regularly that praying is my real job, and it is true. This blog reflects the lesson I learned that praying is like breathing, best practiced throughout the day with each intake of air.

Somehow, praying with people from multiple countries reignites the certainty in my soul of God’s intent to save all who are willing, of His desire to bless those who love Him, and of the fellowship of the believer no matter the physical distance. His first thought about us all is mercy and He longs for us to receive the loving-kindness that draws us to His heart.

Remembering how God used singing His word to underline His love for me in those early days has drawn me back into the Psalms in my personal prayer and worship time too. I found the list of songs from the Word written in the back of my older Bible, the one I had set aside with using my electronic reader with its lighter weight and ease of use. Trouble remembering tunes and exact wording is a small burden to the resulting delight is recovering times of feeling so loved, reassured, and protected by God, the three in one. Unlike the children of Israel, I choose to revisit the memorials in song that sheltered me as I walked through the storms of life, and those memorials reassure me that my soul will be escorted through each new season of trial and of blessing.
