Choosing God’s Best

Making the best choice is not always easy. This week, I chose to ask God for His best, no matter if my preference is different. I know it pleased Him, and He reminded me that choice is a good pattern in my life.

Memories remind me that He has brought His best to me before – my success in earning a college degree was in part because of His grace to get up every morning, go to school, do a job in the summers, and do a part-time job my senior year. My own strength was insufficient, despite my persistent nature. Commuting to work and college five days a week was not easy, especially in winter.

He brought me His best in my sons – there is nothing I would trade for them – and my daughters-in-love. Each in their own way is perfect for their spouse. My prayers for God’s best for my sons have been answered in greater ways that I expected. Then there are my grandchildren – all of them are my delight. Their futures are bright because He has promised to bless my offspring to the thousandth generation.

My home came to me because of the generosity of friends. He has set guard over my borders and I am safe and secure because I know He has set watch over me.

So, as I contemplated a choice over the last ten days, I chose to ask again for His best, even if it was different than what my soul wanted. The attraction to fulfill a desire of my soul to be surrounded by live music whenever possible dims in light of the potential for spiritual maturity. Additionally, the choice meant asking for the best for the other person involved as well as for myself. The needs and desires of my soul cannot override what He knows is best; the Holy Spirit has made my spirit strong enough to acknowledge my preferences may not be His best for someone else.

So, I am waiting on the fulfillment of a promise. If He gives us wisdom about how to give the best to our children, won’t He do the same for me and for you?

Matthew 7:11 If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him!
