Another Anniversary

Another anniversary of my birth prompts me to a day of introspection. A sweet card from a sweeter friend blessed me today and I thank God for her being part of my life.

This morning, I thank God for my life. I remember how much I loved the house on Hooper Street where we lived when our older son was born. The setting appeared rural although the city was just down the hill and around the corner.

I remember my grandmother’s gift so many years ago. She knitted me a mohair sweater the color of my eyes. I felt beautiful wearing it, wrapped in her love as well as its warmth.

I remember the birthday I got my Teri Lee doll, one my grandfather had given my grandmother. He had won it in a drawing at a convention not long after I was born. Grandma had made many clothes for this doll, including one dress made from fabric matching one of my own. For my birthday, she had made a ballgown in pink, my favorite color then. She loved me so much; she gave me the doll she loved dressing up herself.

My favorite birthday gift to date came from my younger son and his wife. A Coach lover, my dear daughter-in-love picked out one for me in my favorite color as well as a matching wallet. They warned me to watch out for the gift. When I opened the exterior box and saw the embossed label, I was beyond excited. I had given a purse to a friend in need many years before. When she wanted to speak a blessing in return, I mentioned a Coach handbag and it had arrived!

Today, I got a special gift from the hand of God. A vine growing up the side of my garage door was taunting me to pull it off, but I hadn’t gotten around to doing it yet. The unidentified plant burst into blossom this morning. The native wild morning glory blooms in September and I have loved it since my first autumn in Texas. I call it my birthday flower and it bloomed today on my birthday, a mini bouquet from the Father who loves me so much.

Taking delight in the gifts my heavenly Father gives, especially the gift of knowing Him through His Son Jesus Christ is a hallmark of my life. Celebrating my physical and spiritual birthdays the same month of the year enriches my soul as well as my spirit. My prayer is to walk with Him and use those gifts for His glory and the benefit of others today and every day.
