The blessing of seeing my children’s children

Ps 128:6 Yes, may you see your children’s children. Peace be upon Israel! AMP

The verse from Psalm 128 is one of the desired blessings for those who worship God and walk in His ways. I have known that blessing now since 2008.

I became an instant grandmother when my older son married the love of his life, a beautiful young woman with two young children, a girl and a boy. I took them all into my heart and will never let them go.

Tomorrow is a special anniversary in my life as a grandmother. It is my third grandchild’s fourth birthday. He was the first one I got to hold the day he was born. I cannot describe the overwhelming love that flooded my soul for him that day. Somehow he invaded a void I did not even know existed.

And his younger brother has added to that joy; his second birthday is next week.

There is a hope that comes with a second generation that I struggle to understand. I know it has to do with assurance that the future holds good things, blessings uncounted and unexpected. All four of my grandchildren somehow drag me with them to the future, anticipating that there are new dreams to see come to pass in their lives and wanting so much to be part of it and witness their joy.

In the midst of a life with dreams that will someday be fulfilled, their love and laughter and sweet small voices lighten my heart. The boat that I ride through life is somehow buoyed up in their presence. Watching them all learn and grow and move toward becoming who God created them to be makes me long to see more. Dark days are never as bleak as they might have been. Sunny days seem brighter as they play together, swinging, swimming, playing chase.

The joy on one of my grandchildren’s faces when they hug their dog or pet the cat with the velvety soft fur or tell their daddy they love him elicits a smile that lights my face no matter the challenges in my own life.

I am truly blessed this year and every year by the small people in my life who call me Grandma Peg.
