My new way of thinking

I have become a new creature in Christ. Bringing every thought into line with God’s word has changed the way I think. The scripture that has influenced this process in my life is:

Heb 12:1 THEREFORE THEN, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses [who have borne testimony to the Truth], let us strip off {and} throw aside every encumbrance (unnecessary weight) and that sin which so readily (deftly and cleverly) clings to {and} entangles us, and let us run with patient endurance {and} steady {and} active persistence the appointed course of the race that is set before us,

Heb 12:2a Looking away [from all that will distract] to Jesus, Who is the Leader {and} the Source of our faith [giving the first incentive for our belief] and is also its Finisher [bringing it to maturity and perfection]… AMP

In order to keep from practicing vain imaginings, this is what God has shown me to do instead:

1. Make time each day to meet with God, pray and read His word, including having a regular place and time to meet, even when it’s difficult. Susannah Wesley’s prayer closet was after the noon meal in the middle of her large family; she simply threw her apron over her face and her children knew it was their mother’s time with God.

2. Practice the praise of God. Giving Him praise changes me whether speaking/singing by reminding me who He is.

3. When facing a problem or concern, I remember a time in the past when God solved a problem or met the need. If it’s difficult to think due to anxiety or feeling down, I ask the Holy Spirit to remind me of something specific. I find hope in God’s faithfulness in the past.

4. I pray and share with someone regularly who is a trustworthy friend and am the same for them. We keep confidence and pray while encouraging one another.

5. I seek counseling from my small group or church leadership if something is just too big. The wisdom of God comes through others sometimes.

All these steps build my faith in God who holds my life in His hands. I have a part but I must remember that Jesus is both the Author/Starter and Finisher/Perfecter of my faith. I am the work of his hands. If I will cooperate, I will see Him change me from glory to glory.

Is there a time when your thought life is overcome by speculation on the future?

  1. Wow! This was absolutely awesome. I was convicted from left to right and truly needed an eye opener about my way of thinking on certain things.
I thank God for leading you Peg. I can’t wait to get it all in your book (right?)
